Pictou County District RCMP has recovered a stolen vehicle and seized firearms located inside the car. Officers are attempting to locate potential victims and witnesses who may be associated to weapons-related offences involving the firearms.

On June 21, Pictou County District RCMP officers became aware of a vehicle stolen from Cape Breton. The vehicle, a green Volkswagen Beetle, was reported in Pictou County and is believed to have fled from an attempted traffic stop by Westville Police Service.

On June 22 at approximately 2:30 a.m., while conducting unrelated proactive patrols, an RCMP officer located the green Beetle parked outside a residence in Abercrombie. Checks confirmed it was the same vehicle reported stolen.

Officers observed two firearms in plain view inside the vehicle. During subsequent searches of the Beetle, four firearms (total) were located and seized.

Officers safely arrested two people at the scene for property crime and weapons-related offences. Both individuals were released by police on conditions pending first court appearances scheduled for September 21 at Pictou Provincial Court.

Investigators believe the firearms may have been used in the commission of other offences. The firearms are:

  • A Lakefield .22 calibre bolt-action rifle
  • A Park-Hale .303 semi-automatic rifle
  • A Cooey 39 .22 bolt-action rifle

The fourth was found to be a Ceska Zbrojovka BB gun.

The investigation is ongoing and led by Pictou County District RCMP, with support from Nova Scotia RCMP Forensic Identification Services, RCMP National Weapons Enforcement Support Team, Cape Breton Regional Police Service, and Westville Police Service.

Any victims or witnesses with information that could assist this investigation is asked to contact the Pictou County District RCMP at 902-665-4481.
